Using and Configuring System Restore
System Restore takes a snapshot of your computer configuration files, which control how windows behaves. You can use system restore to rollback this configuration to a previous point in time and thereby your configuration settings as of that time, leaving your documents un-affected. System Restore is enabled by default in all version of Windows XP
Open Control Panel From the start menu
,
choose system, and double click to Open System
Properties, select the System Restore tab and ensure
that Turn off System Restore on all drives is cleared as below. Click OK to
dismiss. This enables system restore having the checkbox cleared.

that Turn off System Restore on all drives is cleared as below. Click OK to
dismiss.
To Open System Restore
From the Start Menu
, choose All Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, System Restore.
Note: Alternatively: Click on Start button
, Run, and Type in "%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe"
without quotation marks and click OK.

To Roll back your computer configuration settings to an earlier point in time.
Start by closing any open documents and applications. Note. Documents are unaffected by this action.
1. Open System Restore - Select Restore my computer to an earlier point in time as above, Click Next.
2. Select the date you wish to roll-back your configuration settings to from the calendar by clicking on the appropriate date. Only dates in bold have a restore point available to rollback to. Once a date is selected select the restore point on the right hand side by clicking on it to highlight it. Click Next.

3. Confirm your intentions by clicking Next

4. This starts off the process of rollback your configuration settings to the selected date and restore point chosen on previous screens. The process takes approximately 10 minutes depending on your configuration settings and environment. Your computer is set to shutdown and the restore begins, you will be notified after the computer has restarted as to the result.
Note: If you are un-happy with a system restore point you have chosen then you have the option to undo the previous system restore, next time you open system restore.
